Pi Lambda Theta Induction Ceremony
At Pitt-Greensburg, SPSEA is the umbrella organization under which all other education activities and sub-groups fall. One such sub-group is our Pi Lambda Theta chapter. SPSEA helps fundraise for Pi Lambda Theta and promotes becoming a member to eligible SPSEA members.
Pi Lambda Theta is the most selective national honor society of educators. In order to be a member of Pi Lambda Theta, one must be in good academic standing with an overall GPA of 3.5 or higher and have no negative dispositions in their file. We are so proud of our students’ accomplishments who were inducted into this prestigious honor society. We know that they will have great success in the future!

Activities Fair
Each fall, the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg hosts an Activities Fair, at which all students can visit tables to learn about clubs and activities on campus. SPSEA had two tables: One to give information specifically about SPSEA and to recruit Pitt-Greensburg education majors to be active in our club for the 2015-2016 school year and the other to promote our continued involvement in various Big Brothers/Big Sisters programs. We offered information about the benefits of SPSEA, sold raffle tickets for our PACE parking pass fundraiser, and shared our calendar of events for the fall semester.

Fall Social
Our Social Chair, Jack Hunter, and our Southwest Region President, Bryan Edwards, worked together to create a social event that would allow UPG SPSEA members to bond and get to know each other even better for the remainder of the 2015-2016 academic year. They decided to have a camping trip to Bryan’s camp located in Clarion County in the town of Strattenville. Members enjoyed hikes through the woods, sitting around the campfire, and playing various camping games together.

Spring 2016
Conference Fundraiser
While fundraising doesn't normally seem like membership development activity, our fundraising efforts in the spring are. The purpose of our fundraiser is to help our members raise the money they need to cover the cost of attending the Annual Conference. We don't want any SPSEA member to be left out of going to the Annual Conference! All of the profits over $10 go towards an individual's conference cost. Some people sold enough hoagies and pepperoni rolls to fund nearly their entire conference.
General Meetings
2015/2016 Academic Year
Without communication and member input, our SPSEA chapter would not be nearly as strong as it is. Our meetings include written agendas that cover old business, new business, upcoming events, and advisor reports. We moved from bi-monthly to monthly meetings based on member feedback.
Fall: Wednesdays/Thursdays from 11:45-12:45 in Powers Hall 100
Spring: Fridays from 12:10-1:00 in Cassell Hall 117
Active Member Incentive
2015/2016 Academic Year
We realized that the same members were coming to everything, that meeting attendance was going down, and that members were not making SPSEA events a priority. So for Spring 2016, we implemented a member incentive plan. Each time a member comes to a meeting or participates in an event, she or he receives a raffle ticket. At the end of the semester, tickets will be pulled and the winner(s) will receive a giftcard.
What we're finding is that once people get involved, they want to come because their friends are there and they are benefitting from being active. This incentive program is merely the "boost" they need to get started!
Pitt-Greensburg SPSEA Facebook Page
2015/2016 Academic Year
In order to keep everyone informed of events, to share photos of events, and to notify members of job opportunities, our chapter created a Facebook page. While it is an open group, only people connected to our chapter are accepted as members. These members include not only current SPSEA members, but also graduated members, education faculty, and other staff on campus who support SPSEA endeavors. We share reminders for upcoming meetings, promote attendance at activities, and highlight our programs and events.

SPSEA Induction Ceremony
Each year, our chapter of SPSEA inducts all new members into our club and honors previously inducted members, too. The ceremony includes speakers, a dinner, and recognition of new and present members. Our keynote speaker was Susan McDonald, UPG professor of English and founder of the former KARAT School of Learning.
